While touching on well-told beats – Howard’s decision to go solo, Isbell’s getting sober before breaking through – Powers got them to dig into their north Alabama roots. For Isbell back then, “Not having a guitar was like not having a refrigerator. And I started realizing I was really fortunate, because that’s how we shared time with each other, the thing we talked about, and the things we enjoyed. There was an inordinate number of people from Green Hill, Alabama, who wound up being professional musicians.” Remember Tompkins, who got Isbell into his first band as a teenager? He went on to write country hits for the likes of Carrie Underwood and Kenny Chesney.
For a while just a guitar player, Isbell started making up lyrics to other artists songs. Isbell noted since his mom had him “reading a lot and early,” he, “felt like I could express myself verbally and musically, but to get a vocal melody going was a difficult thing for me. Took me a long time.” He got there by improvising guitar lines and then transposing those to vocal melodies he’d sing.
After playing their first show together as the Shakes, they later changed the name name to Alabama Shakes, “that’s when we knew it.” Howard added, “What’s full circle is I remember Drive-By Truckers from north Alabama, and I remember seeing them touring around the world, and I was saying ‘If they can do it, we can do it.’”for advice on how to break into studio work. Hood patiently answered with down-to-earth basics like, “Show up on time. Make sure your gear works. Be nice.
