Jazz on Film Festival features films that — as the title implies — feature jazz in some capacity. Whether it’s a narrative or documentary film that either deals with jazz or has a soundtrack full of the music.

Five films will be shown, including one in 35mm. That will be “Odds Against Tomorrow,” which kicks things off. The 1959 film from director Robert Wise stars Harry Belafonte and Robert Ryan as unlikely partners in a bank robbery. The soundtrack features music composed by John Aaron Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

“Tomorrow” is one of three narrative films that will be shown during the series. Larry Clark’s 1977 film “Passing Through,” about an ex-con jazz musician looking for his mentor, will screen on June 12. That film also includes a score from Houston-born pianist Horace Tapscott. And “Round Midnight” from 1986 by French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier , will play on June 17. Tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon scored a best actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of an alcoholic jazzman.

Pianist Thelonius Monk - the composer of “Midnight” - figures prominently in the 2009 documentary “The Jazz Baroness” , one of two documentaries playing in the series. Director and British author Hannah Rothschild chronicles the friendship Monk had with her great aunt, jazz patron Baroness Pannonica Rothschild. Finally, there is “Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise” , Robert Mugge’s 1980 doc on the free-jazz innovator and his Arkestra backing band.

“Tomorrow,” “Through” and “Midnight” are currently not available on any streaming/video-on-demand service, making these Jazz on Film screenings the only way you can view these titles. Assembling this program on a yearly basis has turned Lucas into a celluloid-searching Indiana Jones, so to speak. But, even after nearly a decade, he still enjoys going on the hunt.

“This has really been an interesting, kind of archaeological dig,” he says. “The film landscape has changed quite a bit in the past 10 years. And, so, it’s harder and harder to get film prints and harder to track down who’s got the rights to this film. Some of the directors have passed away. I’ve tracked down surviving members of the families of filmmakers and musicians and tried to track down who’s got a good print and who has the rights to things.Craig Lindsey is a Houston-based writer.
