premiered on HBO Max last summer, in the middle of the pandemic, it felt like a perfectly timed comedic treat for the moment. The deliciously vicious series follows legendary comedienne Deborah Vance , who has lost her residency on the Las Vegas strip and is forced to collaborate with the recently canceled millennial writer Ava in order to spice up her act; the riveting clash of personalities that ensues offered just the right balance of escapism and subversive humor.
But the show’s second season is leavened with some more profound questions too, as the central relationship between Deborah and Ava faces some major bumps in the road.
Hannah, your background is in stand-up, and Jean, you obviously have an incredibly storied career as an actor. In a sense, when you started working on the show, you were both taking on each other’s roles there. Did you swap notes at all?Yeah, I mean, I definitely wanted to impress Hannah. That was my biggest fear going to the show, that people wouldn’t believe that I was actually a stand-up. When you’re working with somebody who does it professionally, it’s a little intimidating.
