New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed intercepted Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson late in the fourth quarter Sunday after finding out moments before kickoff that his father had died.
The interception from Reed came with 2:49 left in the fourth quarter, with the Jets trailing the Ravens 24-3. After he made the play, Reed rushed to the NFL logo at the center of the field, knelt down, and pointed to the sky as a tribute to his late father. Be careful when criticizing. You have no idea what a person is going through. DJ Reed got an interception & paid tribute while getting blown out. Some"fans" didn't like it at the time.
— Otis Livingston September 12, 2022 Reed told CBS New York after the game he learned of his father's death just before the game began. "I was emotional, still emotional," Reed said."Literally told me my dad passed, so that pick was for my dad, it wasn't celebrating with the scoreboard. That was much deeper than football."Thinking about you and your family, @D7_Reed 💚🙏 pic.twitter.com/4n5FCHd0jfThe Jets lost to the Ravens 24-9, with Reed's interception being the highlight of the day for the Jets.
The game was played on the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and featured an emotional performance of"The Star Spangled Banner," which the fans in the stadium took over singing seconds into the performance.
