Just as then-A&M coach R.C. Slocum vowed in the late 1990s, current Aggies boss Jimbo Fisher has said A&M intends to let the ball fly more this season, this time prompting cyber applause from A&M fans hungry for a more explosive offense under Fisher, who calls the plays. A big reason A&M finished 8-4 overall and breakeven in league play at 4-4 stemmed from a lack of big plays. The Aggies finished 13th out of 14 teams in the SEC last season in pass efficiency, only in front of oft-awful Vanderbilt and its 2-10 record.
“We have more guys at the skill positions who, even though they don’t have a lot of experience, are dynamic playmakers,” A&M co-offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey said. “They may be young guys, but we have guys who can run, catch the ball, make a guy miss and go the length of the field.” Added Fisher of Stewart’s early leadership: “Every day in the offseason program he was out front leading everybody running and doing things, and he’s been very productive in all the practices and scrimmages.”
Zach Calzada took over and played erratically — with a career highlight in leading A&M to a win over then-No. 1 Alabama — before transferring to Auburn in the offseason.
