John Mayer details his new collaboration with The Laundress, rooted in sustainable laundry practices and—of course—his love for vintage, hand-wash-only T-shirts.

during a recent press preview, is antically at ease. His blue V-neck sweater looks cozy: sleeves pushed up, hints of wrist tattoos and a shiny gold watch. But he is talk-talk-talking—not the sales push of a QVC host, more so the self-reflections of a loose-cannon.

Way Out West is as much about long-term care as it is about immediate convenience. “I got through the phase of my life where it was all about procuring stuff. And then it became, how do I take care of this stuff?” says Mayer. At 44, he’s ready to resign from the “fashion tournament bracket” and pare things back to the elemental few. I nod on the other side of the screen, wearing my favorite ’80s T-shirt, faded black to perfection. I only ever hang-dry it. My enthusiasm for hand-washing falls a touch short of Mayer’s, who insists he looks forward to it: “I go, Is this dirty enough yet?” But I crack open the detergent and fill an enamel bucket with a couple capfuls, loading in that not-quite-dirty T-shirt and a black wool sweater with a hole in the elbow that I mean to fix .
