Born and raised in and around New Orleans, Mr. Batiste began his music career at age 8, playing drums in his family’s soul and funk band. After trading percussion for the piano and graduating from Manhattan’s Juilliard School, he and his Stay Human band released their first album and toured internationally, then moved back to New York. But it seems as if he’s never in one place long; while at Juilliard he even invented his own portable instrument.
