JPMorgan has asked thousands of employees to work from home—this may start a new trend
, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said, “We're asking some employees to start working from home this week.” Armstrong added that “We want to be prepared for the worst at @coinbase, but also be calm/rational in our approach. I'm sure much to improve on.”after an employee reported flu-like symptoms. An employee in Switzerland was diagnosed with COVID-19, which prompted employee travel restrictions and the cancellation of Google Cloud’s biggest event of the year.
Something similar happened after the 9/11 tragedy. The big banks were all clustered on and around Wall Street in downtown Manhattan. After the terrorist attack the bank executives realized it was prudent to move some, if not all, of their operations to other locations to avoid being a target once again.
At the time of 9/11 we didn’t possess the requisite technology. Back then smartphones were not ubiquitous, there weren't any reliable web-based video conference options or other technologies that would enable large amounts of people to work from home.
