Esther Hernandez, the brothers’ mother, was by turns giddy and tearful after the hearing. For years, she has attended court to support an array of Guevara accusers, almost always wearing the T-shirt that, in big bold text, declares her sons innocent. Attorney Joshua Tepfer, who has represented several Guevara accusers including Rosendo Hernandez, said Guevara represents a systemic problem within the justice system.“I am tired of coming in here over and over again and presenting the exact same evidence over and over again and having the same judges over and over again say the exact same things about the exact same officers,” Tepfer said. “It’s not just those officers, the whole Chicago Police Department has to change.
Both Hernandez brothers took the witness stand last month and flatly denied any involvement in the shooting, repeating their alibis: Rosendo was at a bowling alley, Juan was at a pizza parlor helping prepare for a quinceañera. Guevara allegedly tweaked those alibis in the reports he wrote after interviewing the brothers in order to make them less credible.
