Julie Macklowe is releasing her own spirit, a high-end American single malt
“I got hungry for success at an early age,” proclaims Julie Macklowe. The entrepreneur began her career in finance 20 years ago in the high-testosterone environment of trading, where she learned to love poker, cigars, and whiskey. And while decades later, Macklowe has left the financial world behind—founding former QVC skin-care line vbeauté along the way—what drives her to this day is an unabated enthusiasm for Scotch single malt whiskey.
Over her years of collecting and tasting, Macklowe identified what she believes is a hole in the market: the world has been missing a high-end American single malt. So, she decided to make one. “As far as we know, there are only two or three other distilleries in the world using columns for malt whiskey,” she says. She chose to produce a single malt because of the versatility of the base grain and the wide range of flavors—fruity, spicy, smokey, and peaty—it can elicit.
