Federal investigators launched a sweeping pattern and practice probe into allegations that the Trenton, N.J., police repeatedly used excessive force.

The Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation Tuesday into the Trenton, N.J, police over allegations that officers repeatedly used excessive force and engaged in inappropriate stops and searches.
Authorities said the probe was not based on a specific incident.
