Verlander, coming off a messy, six-walk performance last Friday in a loss to the Dodgers, looked like a different pitcher Wednesday

With the clock ticking down toward the Aug. 1 trade deadline, the Mets won again Wednesday night, soundly beating the White Sox, 5-1, for their third straight victory at Citi Field.

They’ll go for the series sweep against Chicago on Thursday and could be provided with another reason for optimism: Jose Quintana is set to make his debut for the Mets after coming back from a fractured rib that set him back in spring training.to the Dodgers, looked like a different pitcher Wednesday, worth every bit of the $43 million he’s getting this season.

Benintendi stole second, but Verlander struck out Luis Robert Jr. swinging and retired Jake Burger on a popup. Brett Baty made an excellent play on Oscar Colas’ chopper with one out in the third, making a strong throw to first from foul territory.
