K&J’s Elegant Pastries offers a variety of special cupcakes like sweet potato, triple berry, strawberry cheesecake and cotton candy. 🧁 But the Birmingham bakery’s signature “Kolossal Milkshakes” 🍨 are what has gained them so much popularity:
Kristal Bryant’s bubbly personality matches her bright pink bakery store.
But that doesn’t stop her from being hands on in the kitchen every single day. In fact, it’s a family business. Hence the name of the bakery. The “K” stands for Kristal and “J” for Jonathan. Bryant grew up in both Ensley and Pratt City. She attended Virginia College’s culinary school but decided to drop out when The Cheesecake Factory opened in The Summit in 2004. She worked there for a few years where she learned how to cook everything on the menu, and perfected the craft of making cheesecakes.
“I’ve always enjoyed art, like painting and drawing,” Bryant said. “When I took art classes at Jackson-Olin High School. A recruiter from the Art Institute of Atlanta came to our art class in 9th grade and mentioned culinary arts and that struck a chord with me. I learned I could combine the two worlds I love the most: Food and art.”
“I would work 11-12 hour shifts and come home and teach myself how to bake, ice cakes…it was just trial and error,” she said.
