Dr. McCoy actor Karl Urban addresses news that Star Trek 4 is going ahead at Paramount and discusses his possible return. It seemed a fourth movie set in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline might never happen, until news emerged last month saying Paramount is actually moving forward with Star Trek 4.
This Star Trek 4 news indeed caught everyone by surprise, including the Star Trek cast, who claim they knew nothing about the studio’s plans to put a fourth film into production. For his part, Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine recently said he’s excited to make another Star Trek movie if it indeed happens, but indicated he hasn’t yet seen a script.
Star Trek was of course a dormant movie franchise when in 2009 Abrams rebooted things with the original Enterprise crew now played by a new cast, introducing his so-called Kelvin timeline along the way. Two more Kelvin timeline movies followed in Star Trek: Into Darkness and Star Trek: Beyond before the franchise again seemed to hit a wall.
Indeed development of Star Trek 4 has proven to be an adventure almost as epic as any story ever featured in a Star Trek film. But now it seems things really are moving forward, though clearly none of the cast members have seen a script yet. Obviously a lot could still happen to scuttle this latest effort at getting Star Trek 4 out of spacedock but the news seems brighter than it has in many years.
