If Katie Britt wins a U.S. Senate seat today, she is, among other firsts, expected to be the only Republican woman in the U.S. Senate with school-aged children. Read about it:
Alabama’s two previous female senators were both appointed to their roles: Dixie Bibb Graves served for a few months in 1937 after Hugo Black was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and Maryon Pittman Allen served for several months in 1978 after her husband died in office. There are some caveats that may jostle Britt’s ability to notch each first: Tiffany Smiley, a Republican candidate for Senate in Washington state, also has school-aged children.
Yolanda Flowers, a Democrat, is the first Black woman nominated for governor in Alabama. Gov. Kay Ivey is the first female Republican governor in the state. Libertarian James Blake also is running for office. Additionally, nationally, 3,552 women are nominees for state legislatures, which is a record overall and a new record for Republican women, according to the center.
