The Katy ISD school board holds meetings in the Katy ISD Education Support Complex, 6301 South Stadium Lane in Katy.Cardiff Junior High in Katy ISD was evacuated Monday as law enforcement responded regarding an item found at the school, according to Katy ISD and the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
In an email to parents at around 12:45 p.m., Katy ISD officials said “a smoking battery” was found at the school, and the fire department was looking into the matter. At around 1:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office announced in a Twitter post that a"suspicious package" was found underneath a cafeteria table.
The school was evacuated, and students were sent to Mayde Creek High School, where they were being supervised through the end of the school day. The district said parents of Cardiff Junior High students may pick up their children from Mayde Creek at any time. Katy ISD declined to comment on the sheriff’s office’s Twitter post, stating, “The information being disclosed by HCSO has not been confirmed with the Katy ISD Police Department, who remains the lead agency in this incident.”
