Kent State University on Saturday will look to both the past and the future during the annual commemoration of the May 4, 1970 shootings.
This is a memorial Sunday, May 3, 2020, on the Kent State University campus site where four students, Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder, were killed when Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire May 4, 1970 during a student protest against the escalation of the war in Vietnam. In addition to the four students killed, nine were wounded in the 13 seconds it took 28 guardsmen to get off 67 rounds.
May 4, 2024 marks 54 years since the Ohio National Guard opened fire on university students during an anti-war protest. The shooting, which killed four people and injured nine others, sparked a turning point in the nation’s history. The university in 2022 placed nine bronze markers in locations where the shootings took place.
