Full-time workers at crowdfunding website Kickstarter have voted to unionize after nearly a year of public organizing among its staff, becoming the first major tech company to do so and paving the way for others to possibly follow.
The staff’s organizing group, Kickstarter United, tweeted out that it was certified by the National Labor Relations board and will begin to create a bargaining committee in anticipation of its first contract negotiations with Kickstarter management. Eighty-five staffers at Brooklyn-based Kickstarter—including designers, customer support specialists, directors, engineers and coordinators—have agreed to affiliate with the Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 153 in New York, following a 46-to-37 vote.Always Punch Nazis
was criticized by alt-right website Breitbart and subsequently taken down by Kickstarter management, despite employees declaring the project didn’t violate the site’s terms of service. Union talks became public in March 2019, and in September, Kickstarter fired two organizers within eight days of each other,Talk of unions in the tech industry has grown louder each year. Last month, workers for the grocery delivery app Instacart called for a boycott of the service until a 10% default tip was restored, and hundreds of Amazon staff protested the company’s ongoing ties to oil and gas companies, despite warnings not to do so.
