We chat with KimFCoates about his fascinating new psychological thriller NeonLights, what drew him to the project and made him want to be a producer, and how joyful it was to work alongside his daughter Brenna Coates on set:
Neon Lights, arriving on digital and On Demand July 12, is a psychological thriller starring Dana Abraham. Despite this being his first leading role, it is also his feature film debut as producer and co-writer, which speaks to his tenacity as a filmmaker. The movie focuses on his character Clay Amani, a tech tycoon on the verge of losing his business unless he does some major soul searching.
Screen Rant: When you first read this script, what was it that jumped out at you? What did you even understand on the first read through? Because it's a thinker. Kim Coates: Obviously, Brenna was a big part of this. Then we started talking about some of the other actors, and I got to meet Rouzbeh on the phone. It's COVID, so there's no meeting anyone; it's all Zoom, Zoom, Zoom.
You find out something about his early days as a boy, and then all of a sudden, he's at his shrink's office and you start to piece things together."Wait a minute. Where are we going with this man?" He puts his head back on that couch, and then we go to this estate with his family, his brothers, his sister-in-law... And I'm telling you, my character intertwines through the whole thing, and you don't know what the hell's going on.
Kim Coates: I can't give much away, but I will say that I came from a incredibly beautiful family. I was so lucky that my mother and father were so gentle and kind and strong and funny. We didn't have a lot growing up as kids, but we always had a roof over our head, and it was a peaceful environment.
