Though S.A.'s XFL team logo is a bull, Google thinks 'Brahmas' refers to this chicken...
Google, however, thinks the Brahmas are named after an unrelated species of American chicken. The, which can produce giant roosters and hens, was once the most-used breed for poultry meat in the United States, before it became known as more of a laying-hen species.
Brahmas can produce some of the biggest chickens, with weights of 18 pounds in roosters and 13 pounds in hens recorded, and the species can reach 30", or 2'6", tall, the size of a toddler. The Asiatic species, which was developed in America after predecessor species of"very large fowl" were imported from Shanghai, according to the, a nonprofit focused on preserving and promoting rare breeds. Chittigong fowls from India also were incorporated into the species.
What became known as the Brahma was originally known under at least 12 names, according to the nonprofit. Brahma chickens were shipped to England after developing in the United States, and the Brahma was one of two species, along with the Cochin, another large species of chicken, which fueled the"Hen Fever" obsession with chicken that hit the U.S. in the 1850s.
