The dream seemed impossible, especially to the skinny 9-year-old Colorado kid who sat in front of a television and imagined how fantastic it would be to wear the sneakers of Chauncey Billups, as Mr. Big Shot led the Detroit Pistons to the NBA championship in 2004.
Even people who love White will testify this is an impossible dream that had no business coming true. Colorado is fertile ground for big dreamers, fostering the ambition to scale 14,000-foot peaks and launch rockets into space. But nobody in the history of this state has ever risen further out of nowhere and climbed higher than White in the sport of basketball.
What happened to White is the hoops version of a Marvel Comics superhero story. He is the Dr. Bruce Banner of the hardwood. Late bloomer? While in college, White grew to be 6-foot-4, with his new body infused by gravity-defying athleticism. That’s Incredible Hulk stuff.
