The restrictions to the City Council’s public comment rules showed up in Wednesday’s agenda, but there appeared to be no official, widely circulated announcement in Los Angeles beyond some media coverage the day of the meeting.

Martinez gave a stern warning at the start of Wednesday’s meeting that she won’t be allowing certain behavior at council meetings, saying, “I want to make something very clear on how I run this council chambers and council meetings … the yelling, the calling names, the derogatory language and causing disruption will not be tolerated.”

The move to take away the public’s ability to offer remote comment did not sit well with many others at the Wednesday meeting. Miki Jackson of Highland Park used part of her comment time to ask the council to restore the call-in option, saying that it is difficult for some to get downtown. Jackson went to City Hall on Wednesday to urge the council not to repeal an ordinance adopted during the pandemic that gave relief to people who were struggling with paying the rent for storage facilities.
