L.A. schools chief Carvalho signals initiatives for new calendar year: an academic plan for every student; late buses for tutoring; AC for food workers; accelerated campus greening.

Los Angeles schools Supt. Alberto Carvalho said this week that he is moving to create a unique study plan and progress report for every student and also to bring in “late buses” so children can stay after school for tutoring and get a ride directly to their homes — efforts to improve learning andThe proposed Individual Acceleration Plans would affect all students in the nation’s second-largest school district and provide parents with a clear explanation of how their children are doing in school.

The exact content — which standardized test scores would be included, for example — is still under design, officials said. The superintendent also previewed plans to, within a year, insure that all food-service workers have air-conditioned and heated spaces where they work. That was welcome news to Heather Mura, principal at Alta Loma Elementary, an asphalt-intensive campus in Mid-City and one of the Carvalho’s stops on Tuesday during the last of twodesigned to give students extra learning time with a teacher at school.
