Calls to repeal a four-cent-per-gallon gas tax in Lake County were rejected at a board committee meeting on Thursday.
In a Monday news release announcing her proposal to repeal the tax, she noted that “gas prices are hovering around $5.75 a gallon in my district.”County staff received clarification that a temporary pause or holiday was not possible after reaching out to the Illinois Department of Revenue, and committee members declined to support Simpson’s proposal to add discussion of a potential repeal to the agenda for the committee’s next meeting in July.
“I’m not saying we should abandon forever,” Simpson said. “I’m just saying we should pause it when our residents are in a time when they can’t feed their families, and they can’t drive to work. But I’ve never supported property tax . “If that tax is eliminated or rescinded, there’s no requirement on the gas station owner that they have to do an in-kind reduction in their gas price,” he said. “You’ve seen that before with other instances over the years when we have a gas shortage, how quickly the gas prices go up.”Simpson hoped to get the item on the agenda in July so that it could move to a vote before the full board in August.
“We’ve prioritized holding the line on property taxes at our board, and we’ve been very successful for the past three years at doing something that’s never been done before which is zero property tax increases for three years,” Frank said. “That’s where I’d like us to continue to focus if we can.”
