The man lunged at the officer, and the deputy and a resident began retreating from the room, police said. The man, though, charged at them, and the officer fired and struck the man, authorities said.
A Lake County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who lunged at him while armed with a meat cleaver, according to authorities. The man has not yet been identified by police. The officer was not injured. The incident took place around 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 34200 block of Barberry Court, near Round Lake. The deputy had responded to the residence after a 911 caller said there was a bloodied man inside the house who may have taken his own life.
After checking and finding a pulse, the officer began removing articles of the man’s clothing in an attempt to determine the source of the bleeding, according to authorities. As the deputy examined the man, he awoke and grabbed a meat cleaver that was on the floor next to the mattress, reports said. The officer and another deputy who arrived began lifesaving measures before paramedics, who were already outside, took over.
