The 400-acre lake, which is near Seguin, is one of three reservoirs on the Guadalupe River set for repairs to the dams that form them.
Floodgates on the Lake McQueeney dam are lowered Wednesday, March 29, 2023, as the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority begins the process of draining the lake so repairs can be made on the structure. Due to aging infrastructure and previous dam failures, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority will be replacing the dam spill gates for Lake McQueeney, Lake Placid and Lake Dunlap. Dam failures at Lake Placid in 2021 and Lake Dunlap in 2019 caused those lakes to already drain out. The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority began draining Lake McQueeney on Wednesday morning and expects the lake to be dry by Thursday night. Once the lake is empty, the agency can begin construction on new spill gates by late summer. Repairs on Lake Dunlap began last year and will be completed by fall 2024, said Lindsey Campbell, communications manager at for the river authority.“Each project will have an approximately two year construction period,” she said.
After the dam at Lake Dunlap failed, water control and improvement districts were formed for all three lakes to fund the repairs. The districts tax the residents in the area for the funds to rebuild. The dams were originally created for hydroelectric power, but today are mostly for recreation for the community around the lakes. The river authority's only electricity customer is GVEC, an electric cooperative in South Central Texas.
The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority plans contribute any funding it gets from the sale of electric power to the taxing districts, which in turn will fund the new spill gates for the lakes.
