One representative of the residents, Dian Arniandi, said that the government needs to clarify and socialize more about the plan to develop the integrated investment area in Rempang. The residents requested the Head of the Batam Development Authority to meet with them. Faculty of Economics lecturer at Raja Ali Haji Maritime University in Tanjung Pinang, Muhammad Syuzairi, said that the residents who reject relocation are the people in 16 old village or Malay settlements. The indigenous residents are believed to have settled on the island since at least 1834.
According to Syuzairi, the government has been involving law enforcement officers too much in monitoring the development plan of Rempang Island. This is considered to potentially escalate conflicts.
