The Dallas Stars are preparing for late start times against the Vegas Golden Knights in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Dallas Stars left wing Jason Robertson talks with center Joe Pavelski before a faceoff during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the St. Louis Blues at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in Dallas.Games 1 and 2 in Dallas are both 8:30 p.m. CT starts, which typically ends up being 8:52 p.m. on national broadcasts. Game 3 in Vegas on Saturday doesn’t start until 9:30 p.m. CT.

But through the first two rounds at least, Dallas will have to get accustomed to later nights and impacts the next morning.“There’s no way around that,” DeBoer said. “It does mess a little with your day. It messes probably more with your next day. By the time you get out of the rink, decompress, the players cool down, eat, it’s tough enough to sleep after a big game. Then you throw overtime in. The biggest effect is usually on the next day.

There is no five-minute 3-on-3 overtime or shootout in the playoffs. As teams continue to play 5-on-5 for 20 minute periods at a time, some games can approach double the length in the postseason until someone scores. Whether overtime happens or not, DeBoer said he doesn’t anticipate the Stars to practice on many off days in between 8:30 p.m. starts. The team held three full mandatory practices Friday, Saturday and Sunday to make sure they’re prepared for Monday and can afford some off days in between.Stanley Cup playoff central: Stars-Knights game schedule, stories Dallas fans need to knowLia Assimakopoulos
