LAUSD enrollment expected to drop 30% over next decade

Officials are predicting enrollment at Los Angeles Unified schools to drop significantly over the next decade.

LAUSD enrolls about 430,000 kindergarten through 12th grade students, and the number is expected to decline to about 309,000 over the next nine years -- a drop of about 30%.

LAUSD, the nation's second-largest school system, is facing tough choices about academic programs, campus closures, jobs and employee benefits because of the anticipated drop in enrollment. "There are a number of unsustainable trends," LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, referring to declining enrollment and unstable funding, told the Times."The perfect storm is brewing.
