A lawsuit recently filed in Saskatchewan takes aim at the way federal money for Indigenous children in government care is handled.
“By doing that, the province perpetuates the discrimination ongoing,” Peigan said.
He went on, however, to note the parties involved in launching the lawsuit would prefer a path of negotiation, as opposed to litigation, and are hoping for productive dialogue. The remedies sought by the lawsuit are many, including numerous court declarations that both levels of government are in the wrong, an accounting of all funds the province was allowed to “unlawfully obtain,” repayment of all “improperly denied” benefits, miscellaneous damages, interest payment, and payment of court costs.
According to lawyers representing those who brought the lawsuit, it was filed on the heels of a recent decision from the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench.Article content
