Downing captures pole vault while Del Norte girls win new 4x800 relay event for top San Diego Section honors
It took until the end of the 103rd State track championships but in a 30-minute span La Costa Canyon High School’s Iliana Downing captured the pole vault and the Del Norte girls won the new 4x800 relay.“I ran out of gas,” said Downing, a junior, of her tries at 14-2. “Today, everything was good.”Del Norte’s relay team, No. 2 in the state going into the finals at Buchanan High’s Memorial Stadium, took the lead when Hannah Riggins scorched the third leg to open a 30-meter lead.
Meanwhile, with a lap to go, Riggins moved into second with Scotts Valley’s Ashlyn Boothby right behind. Boothby grabbed second with 100 meters remaining to edge Riggins at 4:39.44. “Last week I couldn’t close like I did today,” said Riggins. “It’s better to have this happen this week.”“She’s good,” said a very impressed Dailey of Engelhardt, who came back to double in the 800 at 2:07.22. “I’d rather do bad and go for the win.”
San Diego’s Anisa Bowen-Fontenot also placed second in the 300 hurdles at 41.88, No. 3 all-time in the section. Kaylin Edwards of Long Beach Wilson clocked a 41.57 for the win. Bowen-Fontenot was fourth in the 100 hurdles with a PR of 13.89 with a tiny 2.01 aiding wind. That’s fourth all-time.
