A trove of data shows how quickly fans flocked to their favorites - and how hard it was to launch new ventures.
The Broadway League trade organization distributed the data to members in January, after having withheld it throughout the autumn, releasing only aggregate weekly totals. The full show-by-show numbers now paint a clear picture of everything that was running from September to early December, and how they all weathered reopening after 18 months of darkness.
The quick upshot: While the formerly $15 billion industry was still recovering, many shows made up much, if not all, lost momentum. But the gains were uneven; established brands saw strong sales while newer work, especially plays, struggled. Some of the aftermath has , including the early shuttering of three new plays and a new musical . The latter never found its footing after savage reviews, but at least two of the former were lauded by critics.
Broadway has always been a risky business. Each show is an independent company, launched off a single capital raise, and floated by ticket sales thereafter. If you make your nut, you stay open for another week. If you don’t, you dip into your contingency - and once that’s gone, so is the show. Most don’t have the cash to weather more than a few weeks of bad sales, and those that do still need months, if not years, to pay back their investors and start making money.
