'I am tired of trying to talk people into staying in the United Methodist Church,' Bishop David Graves said.
Bishop David Graves of the Alabama-West Florida Conference presides over a debate about the United Methodist Church's stance on marriage during the 2024 United Methodist General Conference in Charlotte, N.C. Delegates affirmed 'marriage as a sacred, lifelong covenant that brings two people of faith into union with one another and into deeper relationship with God and the religious community.' Same-sex marriage is now allowed by the United Methodist Book of Discipline.
No action on allowing churches to leave will be taken at least until the next meeting of the conference, scheduled for June next year, Bishop Graves said. Bishop Graves ruled any petitions regarding disaffiliation to be out of order until a Judicial Court ruling. The churches had argued that it was a matter of property issues and that a civil court could intervene.
