Readers share their memories of horses helping to deliver milk in Saskatoon after the StarPhoenix published an archival photo.
in the 1950s prompted several memories: milk tickets, frozen milk bottles, friendly deliveryman. In some ways, horse-drawn wagons were actually faster than trucks.
After depositing milk bottles at one or two houses, from his hand-tote, the deliveryman would cluck or whistle and the horse pulled the wagon to meet him at the next house. Thus, the deliveryman did not have to retrace his steps back to the wagon and guide it up to the next stop. Because only half the homeowners took deliveries, the distance between two deliveries could often be four or five houses. I used to marvel at how the horse knew where to stop, block after block after block.
