Photo by Michelle BergA number of non-governmental organizations have recently presented recommendations to the Canadian government regarding solutions for the housing of the homeless.
These are all much-needed tools to create future homeless housing; however, it requires a significant amount of time for analysis, approvals and build. Canadian municipalities should change selected R1 zones to R2 zones, whereby allowing single detached homes to accommodate legal basement suites. This would formalize non-conforming suites and also assist with unused basements being used for much-needed legal homeless accommodation.
