The Jan. 6 committee hearing on Tuesday reminds us, once again, that the law is not capable of self-enforcement; that for the law to be the ultimate cohesive element in our society, there must be people at every level — none too insignificant, none free to ignore their duty — to insist that the law is no respecter of status or station; that the law is blind to such things and requires all to willingly obey for the good order of the larger community.
I believe the “desire to do better” is absent in Texas. Texas woefully underfunds health care and foster care. The truck of immigrants was found 150 miles into Texas, far away from the border. Well, Gov. Greg Abbott, at what point in travel does a crime become your responsibility? After it crosses the border, do you just throw up your hands and ask, “What ya’ gonna do? President Joseph Biden let them in. Call him.”I am a conservative gun owner who does not believe the new law actually has enough meat to merit any celebration.
By the way, there is a law that requires all 18-year-old males to register for these programs.
