— Re: “Kindness for strangers — Their teachers assign math, grammar — and giving small gifts,” Sunday news story.
What a refreshing story regarding the British Columbia elementary school and its third-grade class Kindness Project. The project introduces students to life skills such as social responsibility and kindness, traits that the school deems just as important as understanding how to multiply and divide and distinguish between nouns and pronouns.
The goal of the Kindness Project is to start a chain of kindness in the community and to show kids what they are capable of. Students decide what projects to undertake. They have written cards and bought small gifts to give to strangers, put together care packages for homeless children and did a forest cleanup.
Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, considerate and empathetic towards others. It involves showing compassion, understanding and a willingness to help others without expecting anything in return.Paul Dreimiller, PlanoIf I were “Queen for a Day,” I would lower the age that is required to run for public office and ask these students to do just that!
Imagine a world full of kindness and people who would focus on bringing us together to fix things versus continuing to divide us.
