Lights, camera, exhibition! The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is now open.
Last year, when Carter joined a task force for the Academy Museum, she was given a mission: to help procure several iconic costumes that had vanished to unknown whereabouts. Among them was a pinstriped suit designed by Bob Mackie forthat seemed to have disappeared after the film had wrapped. The “B” embroidered on the suit’s breast pocket stood, of course, for Billie Holiday, but the suit was especially made for Diana Ross in her Oscar-nominated big-screen debut.
In the world he helped to dream up alongside director Ang Lee, Yip crafted a wedding dress for Zhang Ziyi’s character that used a silk weave featuring over 100 butterflies. “It means that they are not a good marriage, which is something the audience knows only later,” Yip explains. In Chinese culture, butterflies are said to symbolize female vanity and transient joy.
