A team of scientists aims to develop the technology required to send a probe to our nearest star system.

One example is a new proposal to send a swarm of small lightsail probes to our nearest star system, Proxima Centauri. With backing from Mark Zuckerberg and Stephen Hawking, Starshot researched and developed the required technologies to make that mission possible. It would be no easy feat, as the concept would require an array of roughly a million lasers capable of precisely tracking the Starshot probe through deep space.

"Operational coherence means that the swarm knows the positions of its members well enough to send laser pulses from each probe toward Earth, synchronized so that they all arrive at the receiver here on Earth at the same time," he continued. What's more, using a swarm will also increase the likelihood that the mission would be able to successfully capture an image of Proxima b – the closest exoplanet to Earth orbiting within its star's habitable zone.

Eubanks said, "Interstellar travel will require a lot of research and development, and that will require financial support, realistically, from multiple sources."
