Waitlist opens for latest, low-cost effort from fledgling Dutch high-tech company.
Over the years we've seen numerous prototypes and university projects that have harnessed the power of the sun to propel vehicles, but they've always seemed to be little more than glorified science experiments.Lightyear 0 became the first company to make a commercial go of a series production solar-powered electric car
. Now it's advancing its efforts further with its next vehicle, the Lightyear 2. It just announced at the 2023 CES show that it has begun taking reservations for the Lightyear 2 in advance of its production rollout beginning in late 2025. Lightyear, which says it already has some 21,000 pre-orders for the Lightyear 2 from a number of leasing and ride-sharing companies, has targeted the U.S. and Europe to be the first markets to get the Lightyear 2 from a consumer perspective.
We expect the Lightyear 2 to have a strip of photovoltaic cells running over the car similar in scope to the Lightyear 0 to draw its energy from the sun, acting in essence as a range extender for the battery. Lightyear is saying that the Lightyear 2 will feature seating for five and that it will be more of a crossover in concept than a sedan, which is evident from the teaser images shown here.
We'll have more on the Lightyear 2 later this year when Lightyear reveals the full details on its latest solar-powered effort, assuming of course that the sun will keep shining.
