Lim’s Cafe, at 592 North Market St. in Redding, is closing its doors after its sibling owners sold the building to local restaurateurs Jeff Garrett and Lon Tatom, as reported by theJeannie Lim, who co-owns Lim’s Cafe with her brother and two sisters, told the Record Searchlight that the ending of Lim’s Cafe wasn’t an easy choice to make, sharing that it was her father Peter Lim’s legacy. “He came from China when he was really young. It was one of those success stories,” Jeannie Lim said.
Another reason for the closure of the decades-old business is that the owners have reached retirement age, according to Ron Lim, Jeannie’s brother and part owner of Lim’s Cafe.
“I think it’s a decent spot and I think another restaurant would do well there,” Garrett told the Record Searchlight. Lim’s Cafe first opened in 1933 and changed locations twice before hitting on its current location on Market Street, which became its permanent home, in 1957. Throughout its tenure, the family restaurant has offered a no-fuss atmosphere with classic red booths and a mixed menu of Chinese and American dishes. There was an all-day breakfast menu filled with hefty portions of steak and eggs or omelets as well as Chinese comfort dishes like chow mein or cashew chicken stir-fry.
