A forceful, 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Morocco late Friday, officials said. It was felt in the historic city of Marrakesh as well as Casablanca, Rabat, and Fez.

that this was the first quake of such magnitude to hit the area in more than 100 years. It said earthquakes of this size were “uncommon but not unexpected” there, adding there had been none with a magnitude higher than 6 since 1900.

A representative of Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics told Moroccan media that this is the first time in a century that they had recorded this level of seismic activity in Morocco. The main shock was “followed by hundreds of aftershocks,” he added. The quake has sparked concern about landmarks that may have been damaged, particularly Marrakesh’s medina, a

known for its bustling markets, tight streets, monumental Islamic architecture and perimeter of pink walls.
