Rep. Jim Jordan’s struggle has prompted calls from both parties to expand the powers of the interim speaker to overcome the Republican’s intraparty morass.
Several Republicans who voted against Rep. Jim Jordan are meeting with the failed speaker candidate right now, according to two people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. The meeting comes hours after Jordan pledged to work the holdouts so the House could elect him as speaker.
It’s a meeting that is unlikely to produce a result, as some of the 22 holdouts are not entering the meeting in protest, and many of those against Jordan’s candidacy say they won’t be swayed in his favor. Some holdouts have said privately that Jordan could have acted like “a statesman” and either backed out of the race or supported the resolution to empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick T. McHenry .
