The Mega Church of Lizzo, located Sunday night at the United Center, was not unlike Harry’s House, the nickname for Harry Styles’ recent six-night stand in the 23,000-seat arena.
ended, Lizzo’s barnburner of a performance felt at times like a rare sequel that outstrips its predecessor. Except in one way: Other than 2022 pop ubiquity, both also share a gospel of self-affirmation and positivity.Lizzo, as she mentioned several times, really wants you to love yourself, to believe in yourself, to remember you’re beautiful. You are not just the owner of your life,. She sings about marrying herself one day. I believe her.
The whole deal is so sparkly, choreographed and driven to a cute showbiz hamminess, it’s like a ‘70s variety TV show — if Marie Osmond greeted her audience with:Lizzo emerged from beneath the stage dressed in a kind of pink Spider-Man bikini thing, then changed costumes every few songs or so, blasting through a generous, two-dozen largely upbeat songs about empowerment and beauty standards and romance and partying and “going Lorena Bobbitt” on the unfortunate man who disappoints Lizzo.
Lizzo is a walking TikTok meme, diced and self-confident and random and satiric and always ready to move on. For instance, she also plays the flute, and so her flute was presented on a sparkling pedestal that rose out of the stage. And then she playeda bit much, and in this day of faux-earnest stars as brands, it’s refreshing. Since she became a household name, she’s been divisive at times — too pop, not soulful enough, too tacky.
Her band is entirely female, and in keeping with Lizzo’s plus-size, her dancers are named The Big Grrrls; a handful of times, the star stepped aside to let them freestyle. On those rare times when Lizzo does pause, it’s also to unleash a voice that would be equally at home in blues or gospel, powering through a pain that feels uncommonly lived-in for pop music. She plays like the real deal.
But for the time being, her act is centered on a question: How should a contemporary star be? It’s not a new question, of course. That her answers — “Trust yourself.” “The internet ain’t .is real.” — are boilerplate self-help feels less like a hurdle than a stage. She asked the audience: “When was the last time you said something nice about yourself?” She had them repeat: “I love you, you are beautiful and you can do anything.
