Yang of Encinitas, Owston of Oceanside are excited to test their skills against best from other countries
Anyone who has spent time on the sand between Solana Beach and Oceanside in recent years has likely seen Kyan Yang of Encinitas and Lucas Owston of Oceanside out in the water, catching waves.
Also, surfing officially has finally been recognized as an Olympic sport and will be in the 2024 Paris Games with surfing events taking place on the legendary breaks in Teahupo’o in Tahiti. Yang and Owston will compete at the U18 level in El Salvador along with Ryan Huckabee of Flagler City Beach, Fla.
When the 12-member U.S. team, consisting of six boys and sixgirls, met in Oceanside this week as the city was named the official training ground for USA Surfing, Simmons saved a U.S. flag from that victory that he brings to every team practice.
