The first session about how NJ Transit should rebuilt its largest South Jersey transit hub brought many suggestions, including for local food.
The transit center was built in 1989 and named for former State Sen. Walter Rand. It is home to 26 NJ Transit bus lines, is a major stop for RiverLine light rail service and PATCO rapid transit service to Philadelphia and suburban Camden County. The road to a new center started in 2021 with a request for proposals and a nine-month initial design process.
Four instant polls conducted allowed participants to rank features that mattered the most to them in a new transportation center. When it came to food, a majority preferred getting sandwiches and coffee from local businesses rather than national franchises. Several participants asked about opportunities for local businesses in addition construction jobs and other employment opportunities in the new transit center.Other features participants asked for are better connection to the RiverLine light rail and PATCO trains, and WiFi in the terminal.
