Contrary to the long-held belief that the Late Ordovician mass extinction event , which occurred 443 million years ago and eliminated about 85% of all species, was primarily caused by a short-lived ice age, a new study suggests that global warming also played a significant role.
Textbooks written during the last 50 years will tell you that 443 million years ago upwards of 85% of alldisappeared towards the end of the Ordovician Period because of a short-lived ice age in what is known as the oldest and probably second most severe mass extinction event in all of Earth’s history.
