Dozens of cattle will move through downtown as the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo...

You’d better mooove over for a stampede of longhorns, farm animals, runners and rodeo fans if you’re downtown as the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Heritage weekend gets under way Saturday morning.annual Western Heritage Parade & Cattle Drive, starting on Houston Street at Interstate 35 and traversing east through downtown, ending at – where else? – the Alamo.

The parade celebrates the historic Texas and Tejano roots of cattle drives and rodeos and ushers in the annual stock show at the Bexar County-owned Freeman Coliseum grounds and AT&T Center, Feb. 9-26It’s a tradition with ties to Texas and American independence. In the 1770s, cattle raised by Tejano ranchers on mission ranches in and around San Antonio were driven to Louisiana to feed Spanish soldiers who fought the British during the American Revolution.

For early risers, there’s also the Wrangler Breakfast on the west end of the parade route at Milam Park starting at 9 a.m., and the Stampede 5K, which begins and ends at the park, at 9:30 a.m. Spectators can stop by the Vaquero Cook-Off in Market Square after the parade. The parade and bovine procession began in 2008 with 35 head of cattle, 60 parade entries and an estimated 5,000 parade-watchers. It has since grown to tens of thousands of spectators – with up to 100 head of longhorn cattle clopping down the normally-bustling Houston Street, along with horses, sheep and other livestock. Herding dogs typically also are part of the procession of four-legged, outdoor-loving creatures.

The parade was canceled because of COVID-19 in 2021, and last year was staged amid freezing weather. About 35 organizers participated last year, but some groups had to cancel because of the weather.
