SAN ANTONIO — The 30th Alamo Bowl wasn’t the shootout so many expected.
“I’m proud of what we’ve done from Year 1 to Year 2,” Sarkisian said after Texas improved from five wins to eight. “I think we’re making really good progress. The key for us now is to take the next step going into Year 3.” Ewers completed 31 of 47 passes for 369 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers. Those numbers could have been even more impressive if not for some drops, including a few backbreaking blunders by sophomore receiver Xavier Worthy. This hadn’t been the sequel Worthy was hoping for. A freshman All-American in 2021, the spindly speedster put up solid numbers during the regular season but struggled with drops while trying to get aligned with Ewers.
On second-and-11 from the Texas 39, Ewers lofted a picturesque spiral to Worthy deep down the sideline over a pair of UW defensive backs. The ball plunged right through Worthy’s hands and hit the turf. “It’s tough, but I didn’t lose any confidence in him,” Ewers said. “And I know he didn’t lose any confidence in himself. It happens every now and then, but it sucks to see it happen in crucial situations like it was.”Texas couldn’t establish the run, which led to too many third-and-long situations. And it couldn’t stymie Washington on the “money downs” – the Huskies converted 11 of 20 third downs and 2 of 3 fourth downs.
The Longhorns’ breakout offensive star this season, Sanders finished with five catches for 36 yards in his first bowl game. That brought his season total to 54, the most ever by a Texas tight end.
