The sarcophagus was taken to Germany before it was smuggled into the U.S. in 2008, the DA’s office said.The Associated Press reported“We are pleased that this object will be returned to Egypt, where it rightfully belongs,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg said in a written statement.
A private collector bought the sarcophagus, which is also known as the “Green Coffin,” and it was loaned to the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences, according to the DA’s office.
